At the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the building where Ben Stiller spent a whole movie being chased by a T. rex skeleton in Night at the Museum, American fashion handed out its most important prizes on Monday night. And for the second time in three years, the biggest one went to a designer whose signature is not a logo, a viral bag or a celebrity collab. It is crochet. Handmade, in Jamaica.
Rachel Scott of Diotima was named American Womenswear Designer of the Year at the CFDA Fashion Awards 2026 on November 2. If you only check the winners list, that is the headline. If you look a little closer, it is also a fairly clear statement about what the American industry wants to be right now.
The CFDA Awards 2026 winners at a glance
The Council of Fashion Designers of America revealed four designer categories live on stage, while the honorary awards had been announced in advance. Keke Palmer hosted. CFDA chairman Thom Browne and interim CEO Hildy Kuryk presided over the evening. The presenters included Anna Wintour, Matt Damon, Hailey Bieber, Cole Escola and Zoë Kravitz, which is the kind of lineup that makes a museum gala feel like a crossover episode.
Scott beat a strong field for womenswear: Catherine Holstein of Khaite, Michael Kors, Tory Burch plus Wes Gordon of Carolina Herrera. Ralph Lauren took American Menswear Designer of the Year against Public School New York, Thom Browne, Todd Snyder and Willy Chavarria. The jeweler Ana Khouri won American Accessory Designer of the Year. Colleen Allen took the Google American Emerging Designer of the Year award in a category that also included Zane Li of Lii, who had already won the 2026 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
The honorees read like a seating chart of fashion power. Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent received International Designer of the Year. Tory Burch got the Positive Change Award. The photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman got the Founder’s Award, Eva Chen the Media Award. Susan Cianciolo received the Isabel Toledo Board of Directors’ Tribute and Peter Marino the Fashion Icon Award. Gap Inc. received the Innovation Award.
Why Rachel Scott keeps winning
Scott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, studied at Colgate University and trained in Milan before working at Costume National. She launched Diotima in 2021 while she was still vice president of design at Rachel Comey. The brand shares its name with the philosopher who lectures Socrates about love in Plato’s Symposium, which is a pleasingly nerdy choice for someone who studied French philosophy.
Her clothes are built around craft: crochet pieces made in Jamaica, intricate handwork, a sensual cut that never looks like a costume of “Caribbean style”. Diotima won the CFDA emerging prize in 2023 and the womenswear title in 2024. Since September 2025 Scott has also been creative director of Proenza Schouler, where she showed her first collection in February 2026. So she now runs two labels at once. A second womenswear win does not prove that everyone loves both jobs equally, but it does show how much credit the industry is ready to give her.
Repeat winners are nothing new in this category. Marc Jacobs won it three times; Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, Narciso Rodriguez and Raf Simons won it twice. What is different here is scale. Diotima is a young independent label, not a heritage house with a perfume empire behind it. When a jury hands the same trophy to that kind of brand twice in three years, it is telling you which story it wants to tell.
Craft as the new flex
Our interpretation: the 2026 results lean hard toward the hand. Khouri is a jeweler known for sculptural, almost architectural pieces. Allen is a newcomer. Ralph Lauren, now more than half a century into his career, is basically the patron saint of the idea that clothes can carry a whole biography. Even the red carpet played along. Keke Palmer wore a gold Bob Mackie dress that Raquel Welch had worn in 1975, which is about as archive as a host look gets. Demi Moore arrived in a custom GapStudio dress designed by Zac Posen, a neat nod to Gap’s Innovation Award.
That focus makes sense in a year when big luxury groups are struggling to justify their prices. If you are being asked to pay more for less, you want to see the work. Crochet that takes hours to make is very hard to fake with a marketing budget. Nobody can prove the CFDA voted with that in mind. But the pattern is there.
What this means for you
Awards rarely change what you buy next week. Their power is slower and more indirect. A CFDA win opens doors to retailers, investors and red carpets. It also tells editors (yes, us included, we are already drafting the next profile) whose name to follow. For Scott, a second trophy will intensify the scrutiny of her Proenza Schouler work. For Allen and Khouri, it is a spotlight that can change a company’s size within a few seasons.
And for you, the takeaway is less about one designer than about a direction. American fashion spent years chasing hype drops and logo moments. On a Monday night among the fossils, it voted for things that take time to make. Whether shoppers follow with their wallets is the real test. That result will not be announced on stage.
