Somewhere in north London there is an ordinary residential street where Martine Rose once staged a fashion show with street-cast models in boxy jackets and ballooning bombers. That street now has a direct line to Paris. On 6 November 2026 Balenciaga named Martine Rose its new creative director. She starts on 16 November and will oversee men’s, women’s and couture.
If you have been following fashion’s game of musical chairs, you may need a moment. The appointment came only a day after the house confirmed the exit of Pierpaolo Piccioli, who had arrived from Valentino in July 2025 and lasted roughly 16 months. In luxury terms that is less a tenure than a long weekend.
Who is Martine Rose?
Rose is a London designer of British-Jamaican heritage who studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Middlesex University. She founded her namesake label in 2007, which means it turns 20 next year. For most of that time she was something of a designer’s designer: menswear built on exaggerated proportions, nipped waists, oversized outerwear and a deep library of subculture references, from rave and reggae to punk, ska and football terraces. In 2023 the British Fashion Council named her British Menswear Designer of the Year.
She is also famously uninterested in being famous. “I like being under the radar,” she told W magazine back in 2018. The radar, it turns out, has found her anyway. Kendrick Lamar wore a custom Martine Rose jacket during his 2025 Super Bowl halftime show. Her long-running Nike partnership produced the Shox MR4, a shoe that nobody who saw it has managed to forget.
Back to the house she already knows
The twist that makes this appointment more logical than it looks: Rose is not new to Balenciaga. From 2015 to 2018 she worked as a menswear consultant for Demna, who had just taken over the house and was about to turn it into one of the most talked-about brands in fashion. According to Dazed, the two first connected around 2013, when Demna was still at Louis Vuitton. When Demna left for Gucci in 2025, her name was among those linked to the job. Kering chose Piccioli instead.
So you could read this as Balenciaga admitting it took a detour. Piccioli is a romantic, a couturier of gowns and red carpets. His Balenciaga was elegant and respectful. In our view it never quite answered the question of why the house needed a romantic at all. Kering CEO Luca de Meo, in the house statement, praised Rose’s “profoundly contemporary vision.” Our unofficial translation: please make people argue about us again.
Why her appointment matters beyond the headline
Rose becomes the first woman to lead Balenciaga as creative director in its more than 100-year history, according to Marie Claire and other outlets. Citing the Business of Fashion, Marie Claire also reports that she is only the second Black woman to take the creative helm at a major European luxury house, after Grace Wales Bonner was named creative director of Hermès menswear in 2025. Both women are alumni of Fashion East, the London incubator that has been quietly running a talent pipeline for more than two decades.
That matters for a reason beyond representation statistics. For years, luxury groups have hired the same narrow pool of names and then wondered why collections felt interchangeable. Rose comes from a different place, literally and creatively. Her shows have been street-cast and staged in unlikely venues, including that north London street and a former Vauxhall cruising club. She builds clothes around how real people move, slouch and posture, which is a slightly radical idea in an industry that often designs for the photograph first.
There is also a fashion history rhyme here. Cristóbal Balenciaga himself was obsessed with volume and silhouette: the sack dress, the cocoon coat, the egg shape. Rose’s ballooning bombers and boxy shoulders are a streetwear dialect of the same language. You do not need a fashion archive to see it. You only need to squint.
The complications you should know about
Not everything is a victory lap. Rose’s own label has had a difficult 2026. In March she told WWD that production of her Fall/Winter 2026 collection had been halted in a dispute with her license holder, Tomorrow. Dazed notes that Coperni, which had a similar conflict with the same partner, is now closing. What happens to the Martine Rose brand alongside the Balenciaga job has not been publicly confirmed.
Then there is couture. Balenciaga’s haute couture line demands an atelier mindset that Rose has not yet shown in public. Demna faced the same question in 2015 and answered it in his own way. Curiosity seems a more fitting reaction than panic.
As for timing, Marie Claire reports that her first collection is expected at Paris Fashion Week in March 2027. Until then you can expect the usual ritual: mood boards leaked as rumours, archive accounts posting Cristóbal next to Rose side by side and at least one think piece about the death of quiet luxury. What this tells you about fashion right now
Our read, which is interpretation rather than fact: the Rose hire suggests luxury groups are rediscovering that culture comes from below. The last few years were dominated by safe bets, beige palettes and designers chosen because they looked good on an investor slide. A house built on provocation rarely thrives on politeness alone.
Rose has spent nearly 20 years translating London’s dance floors, sound systems and five-a-side pitches into clothes. If she can do the same with a Paris couture house, the street outside your window might be the next runway. If not, at least the neighbours will have something to talk about.
