Here is a sentence that should make every fashion editor nervous: you are about to read several hundred words about a show that has no date, no venue and not a single published look. All we know is the city, the week and the name on the invitation. But in this case the name says almost everything. Atelier Versace is going back to the Paris couture calendar in January 2027. Pieter Mulier will use it to introduce himself as the house’s new creative mind.
Versace confirmed the plan in a statement to WWD this week. The show is slated for Paris Haute Couture Week, which runs from January 25 to 28, 2027. The exact day and location are still under wraps. What is certain is the scale of the gap it closes: it will be the first dedicated Atelier Versace runway show since July 2016. The house never stopped making couture in that decade. It simply stopped showing it, keeping the handwork for private clients and red carpets instead of a catwalk.
The atelier Gianni built
To understand why this matters, rewind to 1989. That was the year Gianni Versace began presenting Atelier collections during Paris couture week, putting an Italian ready-to-wear star into the most French of fashion rituals. From January 1990 he staged those shows at the Ritz on Place Vendôme, the kind of address that tells you exactly how modest the clothes were going to be. They were not modest at all. They were corseted, gilded and built for women who considered subtlety a rumour.
The Ritz is also where the story turned tragic. Gianni presented his last couture collection there on 6 July 1997. Nine days later he was shot dead outside his mansion in Miami. Donatella Versace kept the atelier going for almost two decades after that. For a sense of how rarefied it was: when she showed Atelier Versace at the Ritz in 2012, the Associated Press reported that the garments were sold to a core group of no more than 100 wealthy women worldwide, at prices from 19,000 to 125,000 dollars. Those are 2012 figures. Feel free to adjust for inflation and emotional damage.
Versace’s most famous public moments were never only couture, of course. The jungle print dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the Grammys in 2000 came from the ready-to-wear runway. Google’s former chief executive Eric Schmidt later wrote that the flood of searches for that dress helped prompt the creation of Google Images. Couture, though, was where the house kept its most extreme craft, the part of Versace that could not be photocopied by fast fashion within a week.
Why Mulier starts at the top
Mulier’s road to this runway was fast by luxury standards. Versace announced on 5 February 2026 that the Belgian designer, who had spent five years reviving Alaïa, would become its creative officer. He officially took the job on July 1. His predecessor, Dario Vitale, left in December 2025, days after Prada Group completed its takeover of Versace from Capri Holdings on December 2. Executive chairman Lorenzo Bertelli was unusually direct about the casting at the time: “When we considered the Versace acquisition, we identified Pieter Mulier as the right person for the brand.”
Choosing couture for a debut is a statement in itself. At Alaïa, Mulier built his reputation on sculptural silhouettes and clothes that celebrate the body, a natural fit for a house whose founder once dressed supermodels like Renaissance statues with a sound system. A couture show lets a designer set the mood at the highest possible level of craft before the commercial collections have to carry the weight. Think of it as a trailer that costs more than most feature films.
There is also a business reading. This part is interpretation rather than announcement. Couture rarely makes money on its own. Its job is to create desire for everything else: the bags, the fragrances, the sunglasses and the ready-to-wear that pay the bills. Versace needs that halo. In the first nine months of 2026 the brand contributed net revenues of 441 million euros to Prada Group. Chief executive Andrea Guerra kept his language careful in the latest results, saying the focus “remains centred on strategic priorities ahead of the creative debut scheduled for 2027”. Translation from investor relations dialect: the new chapter has not started yet, so please hold your applause and your forecasts.
What you should actually expect
So what can you realistically expect in January? Officially, nothing beyond the fact of the show itself. No looks have been released and Versace has not described the collection. Anyone promising you a detailed preview is writing fan fiction, which, to be fair, is a time-honoured fashion genre.
What can be said is where the tension lies. Versace’s codes are loud: Medusa heads, Greek key borders, baroque prints, a sense of glamour that never apologises. Mulier’s work at Alaïa was precise and controlled, often focused on cut rather than ornament. The most interesting outcome would be a collision of those two languages, not a polite tribute to the archive. A house that once turned a safety-pinned black dress into a tabloid event does not need another reverent museum display. It needs a reason for a new generation to care.
For the wider industry, the return of Atelier Versace says something about where luxury is heading after a bruising stretch of slowing sales. When everyday luxury gets harder to sell, houses tend to retreat to the one thing nobody can copy at scale: extreme handwork, shown with maximum ceremony. Couture is fashion’s way of reminding you that it is still an art form, especially when the quarterly numbers suggest it is mostly a retail business.
Whether Mulier can turn that ceremony into momentum will be clear in about three months. Until then you have a city, a week and a name. In fashion, that is already enough for a front row to start fighting over seats.
Fashiony will update this story once Versace announces the date and venue of the show.
